Fun Facts and Tidbits!
  • Some thoughts on CPE:
    • C.P.E. Bach, the wildly expressive and inventive son of J.S. Bach, broke away from Baroque tradition and helped ignite the spark of the Classical era.
    • His music is full of emotional drama, surprising twists, and sudden changes in mood that make every performance an exciting journey.
    • A favorite of Mozart and Haydn, C.P.E. Bach’s bold and imaginative keyboard works influenced generations of composers.
    • Playing C.P.E. Bach is like stepping into a world where elegance meets unpredictability, with music that demands both virtuosity and sensitivity.
    • From stormy sonatas to haunting slow movements, his works offer a rich palette of expression that challenges and rewards musicians at every turn.
  • CPE Bach was composing around the same time that ellipses (…) started being used prominently in German literature to signify wandering minds and emotional ambivalences. (Sam Golter)
    • A literary counterpart to CPE Bach is Irish author Laurence Sterne. He was big for getting young people to reject the stilted mannerisms and speech of the older generation, and CPE Bach was good friends with his main German translator. (Sam Golter)
      • "Courtship consists in a number of quiet attentions, not so pointed as to alarm, nor so vague as not to be understood." -Laurence Sterne
      • "I am persuaded that every time a man smiles - but much more so when he laughs - it adds something to this fragment of life." -Laurence Sterne
